This was my first and not last journey concert for sure. Ever song sounded just like the albums. Arnel is just amazing the guy went from nothing to everything...his voice is as close to steve perry as its ever going to get. His voice is pretty much the same as steves AMAZING! A truly amazing show. Non stop for 2 hours is something else. so much energy! Hope to see you some where close to Binghamton NY.....mabe montage mountian.

I have been to MANY Journey concerts over the years, but this one will always hold a special place for me. Not just because it was the first (hopefully not last) time for me to finally see Arnel in person (OMG this guy is INCREDIBLE). Not just because the guys TORE IT UP for 2 solid hours (only 3 ballads and the rest was pure rock bliss).
This night will be special because I was able to go with my dad. I was supposed to go with my wife, but in the time between buying the tickets and the concert, she got pregnant, and with near constant nausea, she passed. So I asked my dad and he said yes. This was the second Journey concert for my dad. He took me to see my first concert ever in 1986 when I was 16. It was Journey at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, PA.
I am now about 4 months from my 40th birthday, and my dad is less than a month from 60. But there we were, side by side, a stone's throw from the stage (MUCH better seats than 1986), enjoying "one H**L of a show" (my dad's exact words).
I may be closing in on 40, but Journey concerts always make me feel young. I sing along, I play drums on the seat in front of me, and yes, I air guitar along with Neal. Last Saturday night I felt like a kid again.
Thank you to Journey for a GREAT show.
And thanks to my dad for taking me to see Journey in 1986, and letting me take him to see them 23 years later.

First of all, Peng (Maharlika), your review was poetry and brought a tear to my eye as it was way beyond a simple review, and only a true fan would pay homage in such a way that all other Journey fans can only nod in agreement and say "Yeah, that's the way it was" . Well done, my friend.
As for my review, it will be short because it would appear it's all been said.
We saw the Toronto show last year, and were blown away by the tightness of the band, the vocal ability of Arnel, and the production of all our fave hits. Well, the boys nuked the PAC at Darien this year, mixing up the setlist, and hitting the bullseye every time. I'm sure the stage is still cooling off as I write this!
Finally, my wife, teenage daughters and I were on the same page, feeling the music, singing timeless songs along with the crowd. I was feeling very young again, and I hope you all were too. Next time around, count us in.

As the summer heaves its last breath, I with a little help from some friends decided at the last minute to have an encore and see the boys once again this time at Darien Lake in Western New York. Having been to two prior gigs this year, I could not pass up the chance to see my fave band as their 2009 tour brings them closest to my hometown.

Unlike Manila and Sac where I traveled 10000 and 2500 miles respectively, Darien Center, a small yet idyllic town which houses both a theme park and a performing arts center, is situated a measly 90 miles north. The drive was scenic and picturesque as the rolling hills with its expanse of green were punctuated by the sight of countless windmills, majestic yet humbling.

There were no big front acts this time around but an able man by the name of Jeffrey Shaeffer and his guitar provided the fans with enough energetic music to pique the interest and prepare the way. I decided to bring my 8 year old daughter with me since she listens to the boys anyway on a daily basis so why not make the Journey experience her first live one.

The crowd rose to its feet as soon as the boys took the stage. Neal blasted the intro to Revelation which segued into Majestic. The boys opened up with SW and save for some minor glitches during the initial salvo; AP as usual nailed the song. It seems that with the start of the US tour they have decided to begin the night with this dirty dozen hit. AP got the people going and singing along and as soon as he finished OTY, he had us all under his spell.

Neal followed suit with a searing guitar solo in utter defiance to some who claims that such acts were unbecoming of the band. Well the guitar god tonight put all naysayers to shame as not only did he show all of us how to rip a guitar to shreds but more so how his music and brand of guitar play has stood the test of time. He is such a class act.

To help preserve APs voice for the remainder of the tour the boys decided to give Deen several lead vocal chores. His first song of the night is KOR from their hit album Escape. He followed it up with a soaring rendition of STR and a haunting interpretation of MF while beating his drums and cymbals with both rhythm and vitality.

The tweak in the set list consisted of Deen singing Higher Place a rocker from their 2000 album Arrival. Seldom has the band included Steve Augeri era songs during their recent gigs thus some fans have been clamoring for it. By including this song in their set list the boys showed us that they listen and that they care. Deen not only nailed those songs but he did justice to them. You just got to love the guy.

As usual the boys did a plethora of their dirty dozen hits, from SIL, ATL, Lights and BGTY. Jonathan Cain once again proved his piano skills with an extended solo and introduction to OA. AP’s gut wrenching and emotional delivery of this 1981 hit once and for all brought home the point that he is Journey’s lead singer now and that the boy’s image as a power ballad act is safe with him.

As this year’s is still technically an offshoot of last year’s successful Revelation tour, the band played three more songs from their 2008 platinum album of the same title. Like the crowds in Manila and Sac, a lot are not familiar with songs from the album. The boys performed, rockers all, NWA, CFTB and WD. AP once again showed his rock and roll roots as he belted out these tunes with such passion and intensity. Kudos goes to Ross as well for his consistent bass playing and onstage facial antics.

One of the highlights of the night for me was when Jon and Neal jammed for an extended time. Mr. Cain wowed us with the harmonica while Mr. Schon showed us his skills with a mandolin like instrument. They got the crowd going enough as AP sprinted to center stage as the heavy guitar intro to WITS blasted from the speakers. Some fans have noticed an edgier version with AP as compared to SPs. The crowd was very much into this song as a lot danced and sang along. The applause that followed says it all.

In as much as any concert’s success depends on how a band starts the night, for Journey lately its all about how they end it. AP serenaded us with the most passionate rendition of Faithfully that I have ever seen in my Journey life and I just had to shout when he hit and held that long note towards the end. As I see him basked in the limelight amidst the crowd’s loud cheer, I cannot help but shed a tear.

The night is starting to unwind as the boys played their signature song DSB. At this time the crowd of mostly baby boomers and gen xer’s lost it as middle aged men and women danced and jumped in the aisles while the younger set decided to stand pat and just sing along. After the extended version and even before AP can catch his breath, the boys followed it up with AWYWI and boy did we all get it. It was a night to remember indeed.

The boys one by one left the stage amidst revelry of applause and chants of more. The crowd banged on the chairs and after a short while the boys re-entered center stage one by one. As customary and routine after each gig they ended it with LTS and echoes of “nananananana…nananana.” What is not was AP jumping into the crowd twice giving each fan high fives. The night was truly over when the boys took their final bow.

The drive back home was different as it was night time and pitched dark. As the windmills loomed in the horizon I noticed a subtle yet prominent red light emanating from them. It made for an eerie silhouette amid the blanket of darkness. The half moon illuminated our journey but the path was muddled by patches of dense fog. As we got closer to our destination the fog dissipated and the destination became clearer.

Like in life and love the road is full of bumps and detours that makes it all the more worthwhile. They make for one truly beautiful journey.

Journey still holds my heart. Darien Lake was packed with 10,000 adoring fans that were not disappointed. Neil, Jonathan and Ross still have it! And don't get me started on Deen! A drummer of that stature is amazing in itself but his voice is still PHENOMENAL! I was doubtful that Arnel could replace my beloved Steve Perry but let me tell you...that boy rocks! His voice is so strong! He did not disappoint me. Plus his energy brings a whole new level to the Journey music. Awesome concert! So glad I went and I look forward to seeing them again sometime! By the way, thank you to the guys in section 202, row 8 for some great entertainment! =)

My fiance and I were one of the Toronto fans who went to see the show but my fiance and I are still too sleepy and groggy to post a full review right now. We were seated last night with Angie, Evelyn (EB2008), Marshz, Mae-an (Ate Agnes). We also met an entire clan of Filipinos who drove all the way from Montreal to see the show. We got home at around 3:00am since we got lost going home from Darien Lake to Toronto. We got entangled in a web of back roads until we finally got to the border to Canada and safely made it back home. But for a start here is the set list from last night's show which lasted for about 2 hours: (note: i've discovered that it was pretty darn hard to jot down the set list and at the same time take pictures of Arnel and the Big Boys, take mini-videos, dance, sing, clap and shout, run back and forth down the isle and make sure that the ushers don't catch me and glance at my fiance's reaction from time to time).

They are saying that it is 3 quarters full but as far as I am concerned, it felt like this show was SOLD OUT! Arnel was fantamazing! He did not miss a note. His stage presence is magnetic (being so near to the stage, I was star-struck as he danced and pranced across the stage). He was full of energy. Neal's performance made you realize why he is still the guitar king of all time. Deen's singing and drumming was head-bopping. Jonathan's multi-faceted performance especially on the keys are simply awesome. Ross' suave bass playing was an ingredient that glued them all. According to my fiance' who's a concertaholic, the Darien Lake crowd last night was one of the loudest he'd seen and heard so far. And yes, we were indeed loud and rowdy!

The Rock and Roll machine Journey blew up Darien Lake last night just like their enterance song TNT by AC/DC said. This was the best concert I have ever been to and the 11th time I have seen Journey live. Tonight should have ended the debate that Journey isn't Journey without Steve Perry and that they are just a Karaoke band without him because tonight my friends Arnel Pineda become a PTP'er aka a PRIME TIME PLAYER. He just keeps getting better and better, his voice is awesome and he is a all round entertainer. Over the past year he has become comfortable playing with the crowd which was into it and standing all night long. He did a great job engaging us all. I can't wait to for the new DVD, cd, and next Journey concert.

Contrary to the first posting Deen Castronovo is not new drummer for Journey. He has been with Journey since 1998, ever since Steve Perry then Steve Smith bailed on the band for the Trial By Fire tour. Prior to which he was with Jonathan and Neal as the drummer in the band Bad English. If you haven't heard him sing before then maybe you need to get the Generations album by Journey, I know for some a non-Steve Perry album is out of the question. On Generations he sings the songs Never Too Lateand A Better Life, which I feel should be added to the set list instead of Mother, Father (only because I have heard it so often in concert). Deen last night you were a animal on the Drums and your singing is great as always. You have a wonderful voice. Higher Place was the highlight for me and my wife last night, this was her 7th Journey concert.

The band last night was a tight as ever. The sound that might have been a issue at some past shows was dead on perfect last night, once they turned on Arnel's microphone. You can tell that you guys are having fun again. Neal, Jonathan, and Ross I can't possible put to words how amazing you are. Thank you for keeping Journey going.

I have to throw a shout out to Steve Augeri, thank you for getting Journey through all those years. You are awesome. Arrival and To Be Alive Again are in my top two of Journey albums and songs all time. You never got a fair shot with a lot of Journey fans, because you weren't Steve Perry.

As I said to me the best concert I have ever been to, but maybe not the best set list ever. I could do without some of the dirty dozen songs, but that is just me. I would love to hear When You Love a Woman, To Be Alive Again, What it Takes to Give, Once You Love Somebody, Feeling that Way/Anytime among others. I don't think we can forget what Greg Rollie brought to the table and Jonathan can sing those songs because his voice is great too. Unless you are adding in part of the song Revelation in the intro, contrary to the previous report there was only three REVELATION the album songs played.

For anyone who thinks Journey isn't mixing up their setlist - you weren't at this show. 4 songs off Revelation, PLUS Higher Place....Mother,Father and Keep on Runnin' all featuring Deen-O...along with Still they Ride. Just a great show. Excellent energy and a good sized crowd. The band is very tight as usual, but they haven't always had this much zest. The new arrangments on DSB, AWYWI, WIS and Open Arms are great. I can' wait to hear what these guys lay out this fall. I think we may be on the verge of a monster album here.
